FIANNA FAILURES - TOMBSTONES IN THE RECENT PAST.

Read more about: Uncategorized

When considering where to fix your X at the next election, it might be salutary to consider some of the achievements of the Soldiers of Fortune.

1. The closure of the branch railway lines, particularly the Harcourt Street/Bray line where the commuter has been gridlocked for ten years.

2. The Howth Tram - surely a major tourist attraction?

3. The failure to provide a dedicated connection to the mess that is Dublin Airport.
4. The sale of Eircom.

5. The voting machines.

6. The explosion in the numbers of Civil servants; consultants; spin-doctors et al.

7. Benchmarking.

8. The capitulation to the Trade Unions & other unelected bodies (CORI etc.).

9. The delegation of powers to unelected County Managers & the lack of accountability of Local Authorities.

10. The failure to deal with large scale corruption within their organisation over a period of 30 plus years.

11. The failure to reform Taxation.

12. The gross incompetence of Bertie Ahern & his failure to take difficult decisions.

I am sure that there are many of you out there that can add many more Tombstones, and one must not forget the abolition of rates in 1977, one of their great strokes and one of the most costly mistakes in the history of the State.

Yet, FF have always stated that “We stand by our record in power”. or similar weasel words.

Some record!

Irish Parties looking at learning online and database lessons from Obama could do worse than bear this post in mind. Almost as soon as the election is over, improvements and evolution are making some parts redundant and others essential. Get your campaign an i-phone for everyone? Might be better than printing flyers, it goes to show how parties, if they take it seriously, need to keep ahead of the wave - not just follow.
