At least it is according to Minister Brian Lenihan last week.

    It would be a welcome idea. Most 18 year olds I know can’t think 5 days ahead let alone 5 years ahead to make a rational decision on who they want in government for that period of time. They have no concept of national issues and tend to be preoccupied with local issues (e.g. skateparks) which are best sorted by the local community or international issues (e.g. war is bad) about which they have little insight or mature understanding.

    I read about this the other day and I was shocked. Is he an absolute idiot? They issued a statement afterwards saying he was referring to the Dáil voting age or something. A likely story. Fool!

    Maybe this is a good thing.

    I always figured the Irish political system just didn’t care about young people - perhaps it just never realised we had a vote until now!
