More EU Referndums

Read more about: Europe

There has been some talk about how the Irish Referendum vote stops further EU integration. So it is interesting to see that French plans to have a referendum when a country with five per cent of the EU population as a whole (i.e. Turkey) wants to join has failed in the French Senate. Resulting in the law which requires a vote on any nation after Coratia to join.

when you want to blame europe for the result you dont hold a referendum but you say the commission forced us to do it the bastards and when you want to gain cover from making a hard decision that the EU elite might dislike you go the people forced us to do it the bastards. its a pick and mix approach. certainly makes it harder on accession states. I wonder though will europe look to increase from here on in by having special agreements with surronding countries. i.e you are not in the eu and never will be but we’ll treat you like Norway. How keen would the French and German axis be to further expand the centre of Europe to the east. I spoke to a belgian colleague recently who stressed he would have been quite happy with remaining at the original 12 and he would be very pro eu.

This is welcome, given how the last Enlargement was exploited to further the race to the bottom in employment standards and job security. Methinks Sarkozy was preparing to sellout on Turkey and that is why his government was pushing for the scrapping of the referendum requirement.
