Mary Harney to remain as PD leader

Read more about: Progressive Democrats

It seems the Mary Harney will remain as PD leader. Is that wise should new blood have been given a shot. Surely now is the time to give someone else a moment in the spot light. Mary Harney is not planning to remain party leader in the long term and they desperately need someone to build the party around again. Mary Harney is a tired leader who will not have the desire to rebuild the party from the ground up which is need, with her focus on Health. I think this points to a lack of desire in the party body at large to keep going.

Well it seems to be more of a ship-steadying exercise than a resignation or loss of enthusiasm.

Lately all the attention has been directed at who will be the new leader, and it has encouraged some would-be candidates to rock the boat a little. Putting Harney is as leader for the forseeable future will help deflect this attention somewhat and allow the party structures to rework the rules (as they’re already doing) and prepare the groundwork for a proper leadership election and party strategy.

I wouldn’t imagine Harney being leader too far into 2008, especially if the 2009 local/eu elections are the base upon which the party plans to build any new momentum.

well that should give at least one erstwhile candidate for the leadership time to swot up on the difference between “liberal” and “liberalisation” before he repositions the party.
