A July 07 Election?

Read more about: Fianna Fail, Government, Irish Election, Irish Politics

In today’s Sunday Times, Bertie Ahern floats the idea of having the next election in early July 2007. If we are to take him at his word (and why wouldn’t we), this is probably designed at boring voters to apathy and to wear the opposition out with a never ending election. I am sure that the Dáil candidates their supporters out there are delighted at the prospect of another full year canvassing. Similarly, those in the more closely contested constituencies are equally enthused about 12 months more of canvassers.

Whatever the logic behind this, it does not suggest that Fianna Fáil are to keen to face the public. Indeed Bertie has also said that ‘for the last seat in every constituency’, something which is sure to delight his all-ready jumpy backbenchers.
