More Referndums in Europe

Read more about: Lisbon Treaty

I am not sure if this is Austria playing hard ball with Brussels but Austrian chancellor, Alfred Gusenbauer has said that if the Treaty text is changed for Ireland then Austria would have a referendum as well.

Also

Hannes Swoboda, vice-president of the Socialists in the EU assembly, told Der Standard newspaper: “It is not possible any other way - it cannot go on like this.”

He suggested that revising the treaty and putting it for parliamentary ratification again would “not get through” as the mood among the population is too negative.

According to Mr Swoboda, similar discussions are being had in Greece and the Netherlands and the Social Democrats’ move would put other member states under pressure to make a such a promise.

It looks like one of the fallouts of the Lisbon Treaty is that pushing through Parliamentary ratification a second time in Europe to ratify a few Irish changes would not happen.  This would seem to suggest the EU will try to pressure Ireland into ratifying the same text as anything else could lead it to its death in more Eurosceptic countries like Austria.
