Greens take break from talks to refer

Read more about: Green Party, Irish Election, Irish Politics

The Green Party delegation have taken a one hour break from the talks with Fianna Fail on the formation of a government. The break is to allow them to consult their reference group - made up of TD’s, members of their national executive and councillors.

Update: Finds the cows to milk it a bit further (see comment no. 1) John Gormley returning to the talks after the break says that very significant difficulties exist in the negotiations. There is now a lot more noise being made by political commentators about the difficulties faced by Greens over the M3, Shannon and their general inexperience. Are we being set up for the collapse?

Do you think MP that it’s a ploy by Greens in order to make the breakthrough - should it arrive - seem more momentous?

yeah hard to tell what’s brinksmanship and what reflects a fundamental crisis. Interesting also that the first real post-election business on the FF website was a Dick Roche event, as he must be first for the chop in a Green-FF cabinet.

I think maybe we are being prepared for the pullout and breakdown WBS - it has been very quiet for the first 4 days - even in terms of the commentary on the Green policy for entering government.

Whatever happens, Bertie will be Taoiseach.

Bertie will be Taoiseach - until FF, inevitably, turn against him…sometime soon

    Gordon

FWIW I tend to agree with you MP. But it’s an odd week, isn’t it. Wonder what is going through Labours collective mind at the moment.

Yes JG I am serious. The Bev Flynn and Mattie McGrath issues are unlikely to be cleared up by the 14th. Adding FF-PD, Healy-Rae, Flynn and Lowry there are 83 votes if the Opposition provide the CC. Lowry is reportedly open to a deal with Ahern. Ahern will be elected Taoiseach on 14th June. A Taoiseach has to be elected and at the end of the day, SF are not going to vote for Kenny, nor are the FF gene-pool Independents. To become Taoiseach on the 14th, Kenny needs 4 of the 5 Independents to vote for him which he will not get. Bev Flynn and Healy-Rae are not going to vote for the Blueshirts. Mary Harney knows that Coalition with FF is the only way to implement the core-value of hospital co-location which is probably the bottom-line for the PDs. As for the Greens, if they want to be the “leftovers” that’s up to them. The electorate will remember them as a party of protest not of govt, while prospective future Rainbow Coalition partners will remember them as a prickly bunch and unreliable as partners in govt.

God God Brian, I was being sarcastic. Of course Bertie will be Taoiseach?

By the way, the only person who can be fairly described as ‘leftovers’ here is your former party leader who ran off crying when he got rejected by the people. What an embarrassment!
