In news that removes one minor headache for the Government, Beverly Flynn (artist’s rendition) announced in Castlebar last night that she has settled her debts to RTE arising from her libel action against them. RTE won’t comment, presumably because the matter has not yet been finalised by a court. But having rejected an earlier offer from her of €600,000 to settle (against a bill of €3 million), one assumes that the accepted sum breaks 7 figures. Various events over the last few weeks may now require reinterpretation in light of the settlement, including her (to be abandoned) constitutional challenge and Bertie’s near-promise of a promotion. But most of all, shouldn’t the first question for any self-respecting Green be: Where did she get the money? That’s quite a dig-out.

This is not really matter that can be decided by RTE ex-parte.
The €3 million, + roll-over interest, is license-holders money, not RTE’s.
Full repayment should be demanded, especially if the RTE authority are contemplating asking Bertie & Co. for an increase in the license-fee any time in the next three years.
And yes, there must be full disclosure of the amount of the settlement, how interest was calculated, and Flynn’s source for the proposed settlement.
