A battle brewing in Fianna Fáil Mayo?

When Bertie Ahern made overtures to the effect that Beverly Flynn could be in line for a junior ministry position, some on this site pointed out how unfair many of the less infamous FF back-benchers might find the whole situation.
Now it looks like Fianna Fáil’s own man in Mayo, Dara Callarey, is trying to pour cold water on the prodigal daughter’s return to the Fianna Fáil fold. But is this Callarey echoing the concerns of party officials in that county, or is he just venting his own personal frustration at having his hard work ignored?
Whatever happens next in the Flynn saga, it seems certain that Mayo will provide political fireworks of some description in the coming months and years.

Dara is an intelligent person, trying to ensure his organisation stays united. If FF HQ want Beverly back, she’ll be back. Same as happened with Blaney here in Donegal NE. The deal is done; there will certainly be “consultation”, most likely led by a senior minister, but none of it will mean anything. Beverly is back in the fold, legal upsets aside. It’s simply a matter of timing now.
John Carty is the man who has my sympathies in this situation. Perhaps he gazes at the BCF deal and wonders would he have been as well to run as an Independent. Hardly would have improved his chances, but then again unlikely to have made them worse…
