The legal wildcards in the negotiations

Read more about: Mayo, Parties, Tribunals

It bears reminding that the Mahon tribunal resumes tomorrow. Examine the witness list for a sense of the potential landmines lurking within this evidence. Even if one takes the view that the 42 percent FF vote didn’t care about the underlying issues, other voters care and so do potential coalition partners. So the tribunal will be chugging along even as Bertie goes courting. And then there’s RTE’s pursuit of Beverly Flynn for legal costs, which will imperil her status in the Dail. So two contingencies lurk: more shockers from Mahon that scare off FF’s would-be partners, and a by-election in Mayo that could draw the highest national profile of any by-election since the tumultuous days of Dublin West, 1982.

And there’s little doubt in my mind that FG would win the by-election on Kenny’s turf.
