Word from the count centre is that Catherine Byrne (FG) is going to be elected without reaching quota on the final count, which means that Aongus O’Snodaigh (SF) will shade it ahead of Eric Byrne (Lab), with just 67 votes between them.

Right now papers are being re-checked to make sure that none of Eric’s votes went to Catherine by mistake, since they both have the same surname. There’s talk that Labour will be calling for a full recount.

It’s second time unlucky for Byrne, who lost out in 1997 to FF’s Ben Briscoe by a similarly small number of votes. He’s written probably the single best blog by any candidate throughout the campaign

If Catherine Byrne has been elected without reaching the quota, then surely the last seat must be decided at the same time? Candidates are only elected without reaching the quota when there are no more surpluses or eliminations to distribute.

I’ll edit the post to make that clearer: She hasn’t been officially declared, but she’s miles ahead of the other two and it’s the last count. It hasn’t been announced because of the tight race between O’Snodaigh and Eric Byrne.

Christine, is the 67 votes lead offical ? RTE ssems to have given up on providing details.

I got it from one of his campaign team who’s at the count, so let’s just say I’d be very surprised if they got it wrong!

It was 69 votes between them, which then dropped to 60 after the papers were reexamined.
