Back in February wanted to drug test children. Yet now in May I find no mention of it in their manifesto. Not one mention. Why the change Enda. Finally come to your senses? But what I did see in the manifesto
We will scrap the charade of Budget Day and replace it with a modern system for the development of spending and tax proposals that will provide the Dáil with an opportunity for meaningful scrutiny and debate about the choices being made.
That might make sense to the politco’s but to the general public that is just unfair.
The most watch dail debate of the year is always the Budget. Everyone watchs it. It is about the one thing that brings people in contact with the dail. How many people watch Oireachtas report. As Pat Rabbitee once said oireactas report is for drunks and insomniacs. But the budget is the one day in the year that the vast amount of citizens see the Dail in action. It may be a charade but it is a necessary charade. Because with out it. The Dail Chamber because alien.
Also how long would this process take. They can spend weeks on a simple bill. How long would thy debate a Budget. Also what would that do to the market. Look what uncertainty over stamp duty is doing to the economy. Imagine if this was been debated through a budget. There is reasons why some stuff come into play on the night of the budget. As to leave stuff hanging brings in uncertainty to the market. Also this would just be used to score points and achieve little.

By the way Simon, did you ever write that evaluation of the Green party manifesto done?
Good point on the drugs testing, an essentially ridiculous idea anyway
No afraid not yet. keep getting side tracked and busy at work. But I will try. But of course if anyone else wants to jump in …..
By removing the budget, members of the Dáil and other groups will be able to have a real impact on this important decision making process.
Currently, while you hear of submissions to the Minister of Finance, there is no proper process in place to deal with those submissions - under a committee system member of the public and NGOs would be able to partake in the budgetting system, much like they are when committees are set up to investigate a particular problem. Indeed, it is the same for members of the Dáil - the Budget is almost exclusively a process for the Minister of Finance - TDs and other Ministers have a minimal role. Surely, it would make sense to have a transparent process, where both sides of the Dáil are involved, and interested groups can make a definitive contribution - rather than leave it purely to the Department of Finance?
Good governance or a PR exercise? There’s no reason why these two aims are mutually exclusive.
The Bootcamps are also gone.
And what happened to the policy of positioning Gardai all around the M50 to swing into action when traffic backs up. Is that where the 2000 extra gardai are going.
Congrats on the excellent website, but you’re wrong on the first bit. The drug and alcohol tests for schoolkids are mentioned on page 23 of the manifesto.
