Final Poll in Dublin West
Brian Lenihan, FF, 8496
Leo Varadkar, FG, 8710
Joan Burton, Lab, 7905
Joe Higgins, Soc, 7472
Top three are elected. Quota was 8496. Brian Lenihan reaced it first.
Varadkar elected on fifth count which just left Burton and Higgins. Burton
takes the seat by about 500 votes. Labour looked relieved, Socialists looked
sad. All candidates paid tribute to Higgins, a conviction politician and a
great loss to the Dail and Dublin West.
Higgins was magnanamous as you would expect. He vowed to fight on in the
local and next general elections and proclaimed a huge vacuum on the left as
the main parties merged into a right wing blob. He also noted, and was
cheered by all shades, that Dublin West has three seats when, according to
the last sentence it should have four - 92,000 people, the constitution
says that it should be one TD for every 30,000.
Irish Election are pleased to announce our collection of Irish
Census is provisional - if it is not official then it can’t be used, and he’d be first to the steps of the High Court if it was tried and it was likely to disadvantage him - and he’d win.
Maybe elections shouldn’t take place while a census is pending. But then that’s all could ofs and should haves at this stage, but worth noting in Ireland’s most rapidly expanding area nonetheless.
