Financial Times: Ahern set to win 3rd term in Ireland.

Funnily enough, below that story in the print edition: Italians question whether their political system is fatally flawed.

Apparently Italians feel that they have a political and administrative elite completely divorced from the concerns of ordinary people. Couldn’t happen in Ireland.

I think there is an elite divide in Irish politics, but it is the class of political media journalists, pundits and hacks who are clearly divorced from the relatity of irish policy or the mood of the electorate. This election has shown that, if nothing else. Ireland is so far ahead of Italy in so many areas we might as well be compared to Congo.

Libération even though it’s not a very comprehensive report, focusing mainly on Bertie’s man-of-the-people bonhomie. A brace of comments courtesy of a certain expatriate Irishman.

    Le Monde, more detailed.

and best of all El País. Love it for the link to El viceprimer ministro, Michael McDowell, pierde su escaño.

    Kevin

You have summed this up pretty well.

Describing Bertie to someone in the UK the comment back was “He seems just like an ordinary bloke who if he wasn’t a politician you would know from meeting him in the pub where he meets his mates”.

Fortunately the meeja and hacks have underestimated him for 25 years because FF is not just Bertie but a big machine with lots of people with very divergent views.

The fact he is just an ordinary bloke appeals to many people because he is as flawed as they are, makes mistakes and screws up but you know behind it there is not the nastiness of CJ. He lives an ordinary lifestyle.
