Don’t believe the spin

Read more about: Uncategorized

Folks, its time that somebody spoke out about the axe the Irish media are grinding in this election campaign and I guess that somebody will have to be me. You know, I’ve never really had much time for the media but by calling last nights debate a draw they simply took the biscuit one bite too far. To suggest that the contest last night was even close, let alone ended in a draw is to insult the intelligence of each and every person who watched it. Its just another example of the Far-Left media spin machine, spinning their deceits and attempting to bail out their socialist comrade Bertie. Enda Kenny struck a big blow for the common Irish man last night by blasting Bertie and the intelligentsia out of the water.>

Lets look at the facts of the debate without the spin.

Enda demonstrated leadership, clarity, simplicity, accountability and vision all throughout last nights debate. Health is a prime example of this and lot was made of his performance on health. Enda Kenny set out his plan for the health system in simple terms so everybody could grasp his vision. What is his plan? Simple, to fix the health system and supply 2300 badly needed new beds. How is he going to do it? Simple, by putting it on his Contract for a Better Ireland. Its that simple folks and thats what’s been missing for the last 10 years.

On the other hand, Bertie Ahern wanted to get into specifics, quoting figures here there and everywhere trying to peddle the myth that sorting out health is complex. That’s depressing and we know better. It’s not complex. it just needs to get done. Old “Figures” Ahern wanted you to think we ordinary Joe’s couldn’t do it without first thinking it through and having a detailed plan. Arrogance, ladies and gentlemen. The lefties said the same thing about America before it sucessfully toppled Saddam, remember.

Illustrating how out of touch he is, Ahern demanded to know how Enda was going to pay for the extra beds. Enda doesn’t do specifics, he doesn’t do nitty gritty. He’s like you and me. Who cares how the health system is fixed, so long as it is fixed? Enda doesn’t and we shouldn’t either. Who cares if Enda can’t explain how he’s going to fund 2300 extra beds? He’s in touch with the common man, and what common man could explain how to pay for 2300 extra beds in the health service? I know I couldn’t. Enda “feels” that he can fix the health system, what more do you want?

I’ve read on this website that Bertie effectively got Enda to admit that cancer patient treatment would have to be cut to pay for the extra beds. This is confusing the issue and the solution. Beds are what’s important in the health system. Cancer patients need beds not treatment folks. Ask yourself, would somebody rather be tucked up nice and snug in bed or would they instead like to get radium or chemo treatment? Its a no brainer.

Demonstrating leadership, vision and simplicity folks, that’s what’s important.

Bertie claimed that Fine Gael’s policy for all children under the age of 5 will have free GP visits wouldn’t benefit any child alive in Ireland today. Wait just a second there. Has Bertie got a problem with provisions that benefit unborn children? Come to think of it, has he ever actually told us what side of the abortion debate he comes down on? Can we trust Bertie with the health of our unborn children? With Enda, we can.

And God bless justice spokesperson Jim O’Keeffe. His error on the crime statistics and the confusion it caused afforded Enda the chance to show supreme leadership and, in the near future, accountability within Fine Gael. Is there any better way of demonstrating your leadership qualities than saying “Look, I’m the leader”? That’s what Enda Kenny did last night when questioned on the lack of coherence between himself and his justice spokesperson. Genius, in its simplicity. Accountability within Fine Gael will be aptly illustrated in the coming weeks when Enda Kenny punishes Jim for his error by refusing him a ministry.

And, so what if Fine Gaels spending proposals will cost over 5 billion whilst they only plan to spend 2 billion. What’s wrong with a little optimism? America took an optimist approach to invading Iraq and they crushed Saddam within a few weeks. Besides, its only a difference of 3 billion. That’s only the education budget and everybody keeps telling me how small that is. That’s the cost of 23 days for American troops in Iraq. 23 days out of 4 years is hardly even worth counting. The fact is Enda is dealing in billions and he’s only out by 3. A measly 3 folks. That’s the PD’s share in the opinion polls and so well within the margin of error territory. Its negligible.

Enda Kenny fought the good fight for me and you last night. Its our time now. Time for the common man. The man on the street has been outside looking in for too long. We’ve long known that he could run the country better than that shower in there at the moment. Last night, Enda Kenny gave the entire country a taste of what common average Joe is like compared to the current Taoiseach. In a weeks time we’ll have the common man Taoiseach.

    Spin?!

I dont think a response to media spin can be written in such a blatantly biased fashion.

And as for the view that voters shouldnt worry about the costs of election promises…foolish

  2. # Comment by A May 18th, 2007 18:05

    Crap-all of it

  3. # Comment by Dave May 18th, 2007 19:05

I don’t agree entirely with what you’re (actually) saying, but it sure was funny.

    JB, A

It is utterly incredible that I should be accused of ‘bias’ and ‘crap’ without so much of a peep out of ye about the media who called it a draw. Typical lefty elitist strategy to attack the no nonsense voice of reason who tells it as it is. I don’t mind taking the criticism though, as i said in my post, somebody has to speak up.

Your comments are an example of the lack of joined up thinking that your hero Bertie suffers from. You failed to join the dots of the debate in the correct order and now your picture is obscured. JB, the voters are already worrying about things like the health service and how its taking your life in your hands to walk down any Irish streets these days because of rampant crime, and you want them to worry about the costs of elections promises as well? Jesus wept.

Enda Kenny cares about the mental health of the Irish public even if you don’t.

    Tuathal,
You live in an irony free zone if you’re denouncing spin with this biased offering.

What with your compatriot Simon pledging himself to the PDs and you heaping praise on “it was only resting in my account” Bertie I can only conclude The Dossing Times is a partisan, pro-government site.

  6. # Comment by Tuathal May 18th, 2007 20:05

That is an outrageous accusation Niall and frankly its very unlike you. You are a living example of what i feared might happen when i read the Spin-depent this morning. I feared some people would panic and become irrational and it seems once again I was right.

Think Niall. Where in my post did I praise Figures Ahern? Maybe you meant to reply to JB or A but let’s not start fighting amongst ourselves here. That’s what the media want.

I’ll let Simon speak for himself, but I’m partisan for the truth. You and I both are.

We won last night, no matter what the media tell you.

Dave, I was expecting to be laughed at by the left. Go ahead. He who has the last laugh, laughs longest and I know I will be laughing next Thursday night.

    Oh, is this humour?

    Left wing media my eye!

Newstalk is fanatically pro-Fine Gael. They are owned by Denis o’Brien who has close links to Fine Gael so that’s where it probably comes from. Before the Election was called Enda Kenny or Pat Rabbitt were on the Eamonn Keane Show every day. They have attacked the government and Bertie at every possible chance.

Today even they called the debate for Bertie. Enough said.

I actually thought, Tuathal, you were being sarcastic in this blog until I read your comments. You say that once Kenny states it’s in his contract that is enough to win an argument on health, with no figures to back it up. I am a common joe on the street, but I still rely heavily on figures when it comes to making decisions. For me Bertie had the figures right and all Enda had to say for himself was that it’s in the contract.
And your little spin you put of the figure of three billion, that he is working with billions, what’s another three gonna make, when in fact it’s a huge amount.
I still think you are taking the piss with this blog.

Tuathal - did you forget to take your medicine today?!!!

I’m being ganged up on here. I know how Enda Kenny must have felt in last nights debate. Like Enda, I’m just going to keep things simple and repeat myself over and over if I must. The media spun the result of the debate last night and fraudulently called it as a draw.

    Patrick,

You’re using facts and figures as a crutch my friend. Get your head out of books and trust youself. You shouldn’t have to depend on figures to make a decision. Don’t you see that gives the elite few who compile the figures all the power. Enda doesn’t subsribe to your way and he’s about to solve the problems in the health system as a result. Imagine what you could.

    A
Another personal attack. Its none of your busines, but if you must know, No, i took my medicine as normal.

Yes Tuathal. Everyone else is wrong but you (and Enda).

  15. # Comment by Zeppelin May 18th, 2007 23:05

    Oh, is this humour?

Humour Humour do you think the far-left agenda media lieing to the people is funny. Trying some how defy the true desires of the Irish people to rid themselves of the socialist Bertie and give themselves a leader of the calibre of previous Fine Gael leaders such as O’Duffy.

What kind of person are you the agenda media is wrong. Look at the truth Niall look beyond the spin. We need more like tuathal to show us the truth. Because I certainly see no humour in the far-left destroying this country.

  16. # Comment by Simon May 18th, 2007 23:05

I am not going to get into this debate at all. Tuathal has his opinion I have mine. Yet I find it amazing bizarre even that Niall calls our blog partisan when Tuathal calls the debate for Enda and I call it for Bertie. I mean do you have a dictionary. Partisan does not mean agree. Also if you read my post on the PD’s you would see that my reason for supporting them was that they are going to be so decimated in the next election they will not be able to put Bertie in power where as other parties can. How is that pro-government. Also my reason not to vote FG was based on a policy you were debating with me but seem to have stopped defending. I am planning to come back to a debate or two in the past once I research stuff (up the walls at work) Are you planning to come back to it.

  17. # Comment by Niall May 20th, 2007 12:05

I’ve been amazed that so many people disagree about the outcome of the Prime Time debate. Even when I squint, I can’t see how anybody could have thought Enda won the debate. My mother, who is a life long FF supporter, called it for Enda Kenny, who she really dislikes.

And it makes absolutely no sense to call TDT partisan. It’s run by a couple of guys who have their own views. On occassion, they’ll disagree with you, but that doesn’t make it partisan.
