Another half-baked import?

Perhaps the thing that I find most annoying about politics in Ireland is our national tendancy to import every half-baked idea from abroad and assume that it has equal validity in our little parish.

Oops. Before I’d read Paige’s post, I’d just put a post on my blog in which I argue that we should import another half-baked US idea, and reheat it for an Irish audience. It’s basically a call to RTÉ to follow the US example and make the video of next week’s Prime Time debate between Bertie Ahern and Enda Kenny available online without restrictions, to promote and foster the widest possible dissemination of and discussion about that debate. I’ve gone so far as writing to the Director General of RTÉ, Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael making the suggestion, and pdfs of the letters (complete with embarassing typos) are available on the post too. There’s even a petition about it, if you’d care to sign it. It can be another of the blogosphere’s contributions to the democratic process.

So, Paige, is this a bad import?

Fully support this. To carry the analogy one step too far its overdone. It should have been ready to implement years ago but again the technological retardation in this country is ridiculous.

I think that this is a fully baked idea and well worth supporting. Incidentally, I loved the ‘joke’ of an online debate by RTE which just highlighted how both the politicians and our national broadcaster don’t know the first thing about using technology innovatively.
