Where does he get his data?

Read more about: Energy, Labour Party

I noted this from Labour Press Releases of late.

The Labour Party President and Foreign Affairs Spokesperson, Michael D Higgins TD, is in Norway, returning on Friday 11 April as part of a broad-based community delegation including members of Kilcommon parish in Erris

All very nice and everything but this bit caught my eye.

“The Corrib gas conflict urgently needs resolution. Our delegation hopes that Norwegian political and civic society representatives will play their part in ensuring that Statoil develops a Corrib gas project that has the support and consent of the people of the Erris community.”

To me that sentence says that the Corrib gas project does not have the support and consent of the people of the Erris community. Now I would like to know what he is basing that on. For instance I can find a poll carried out by an independent organisation (Irish Independent and RTE ) that says 70% of people in Mayo wanted the pipeline unempeaded. Also looking at the election results from Rossport support for anti Shell candidates was not in the majority. While there is other polls that show support for the anti shell the fact of the matter it is very hard to say whether Statoil does or doesn’t have the support and consent of the Erris Community. Not to mention what sort of project would have their support.

Except that some 99% of the population of Mayo are comfortably sheltered from the pipeline, the plant and any ill-effects thereof by many miles of mountanin and bog. Are the opinions of the population of Castlebar, Ballyhaunis or Cong any more relevant in this affair than those of Dublin, Kiev or Timbuctou?
