The Money

Read more about: Bertie Ahern Resigns

So Bertie got money. Bertie gets paid more then the US president. Yet this is a guy that does not seem to be rolling in the money. He does not have a Haughey still mansion, he holidays in Kerry and his kids have more money then he probably has. And According to Sam Smyth.

Those closest to him had heard the Taoiseach speak of his current financial situation — he owes nearly €300,000 to the legal team representing him in the tribunal. And worse, a further €150,000 if his current challenge to the tribunal in the High Court fails.

Confided

Mr Ahern confided to another colleague that after 31 years in public office, he has around €20,000 in the bank and another few appearances in the tribunal will take care of that.

Maybe the biggest question from all this tribunal stuff is what the feck did he spend the money on because he shows no signs of it and doesn’t seem to have saved it either?

    Simon
Given his profligacy with public money while in office - benchmarking (aka atm), public procurement and construction contracts, tax reliefs for landlords etc etc – his own affairs must be appalling. He’s probably going to moneypenny for a ‘consolidation’ loan. Although he may need to find a few bank statements first.
Don’t be fooled by Smyths article. €20k isn’t even 2 months net pay for Ahern.
