Read more about: Blogging

Just added a new Section to Irish Elections. Called Opinion Polls. You should see it beside Irish Election Info on the top right. It is basically going to try to keep track of all the opinion polls coming up to the election. If anyone knows of any polls to include please let us know. Local polls carried out by local papers and radio stations would be especially interesting.

Update: The latest Sunday Business Poll is out

FF 38% (+5)
FG 23% (-2)
Lab 11% (NC)
SF 8% (-3)
GP 7% (NC)
PD 4% (NC)
OTH 9%

Update: You can see the polls here. Opinion Polls

Although SF has fallen back this shows they could well be “kingmakers” in the next election. If you add their vote to FF-PD you get 50%. That excludes pro-FF Independents. Then again most Independents in Dail Eireann now are anti-FF and leftwing so you would expect them to prop up a Rainbow govt.

I think we will need to see this continuing to be sure it’s not yet another false dawn for the govt. There is no doubt from the slide of SF to FF that their increase in support is down to the 1916 commemoration. It has succeeded in strengthening FF’s “Green” credentials (nationalism not environmentalism). Perhaps in that regard Bertie Ahern may be tempted to re-run the whole thing again, perhaps on a bigger scale next time (the 1966 one was far bigger).

It should also be noted that all these bounces seem to happen when the Dail is on recess, or else after a budget. Again lessons may be learned by that.

The thing is the PD vote is very narrow. They increased the vote last time by about .4% and doubled the seats. A FF/PD Greens or some independents could be back in.

I do think the big story is the FG/Lab vote it is very stagnate. But more on that tomorrow.

It should be remembered of course that even in the worst of times for them, the FG vote tends to be underestimated in the polls.
