Open seat in Galway West

The turnover continues. Padraic McCormack FG has announced that he won’t run again in Galway West. He’s 63 and approaching 20 years in the Oireachtas, the first two of which in the Senate. Galway West is typical of FG’s national problems, with only one seat out of five. They had to be thinking about getting up to two even before McCormack retired. They now may need a big name to anchor the ballot.

Sounds to me like FG are already losing the plot. In Galway East where they have one seat out of four, two candidates were selected at convention (Paul Connaughton TD and Ulick Burke). All good and proper with an outside chance of getting a second seat. Then Dr John Barton was added to the ticket, virtually guaranteeing no second seat, splitting the first preference votes and generally minimising their voter/seat ratio unlike pastmasters Fianna Fail.
I hear something similar is going down in Clare where FG also have one in four, ie third candidate being added, minimising the chance of a second seat. All working to FF’s (and the others) advantage. With Opposition like these, who needs friends!
