Fine Gael have jumped on the celebrity candidacy bandwagon by approaching outgoing GAA President Sean Kelly to stand in South Kerry next year. It follows the recent trend of high-profile individuals being offered places on party tickets. Only this week, Colm O’Gorman of One-in-Four announced that he will contest the next general election with the PDs. Rumour also has it that Anthony Daly will be considered in Clare by Fianna Fail.

Is it really a recent trend? I seem to remember a certain Jack Lynch was a hurling star before he went into politics.
But was Jack Lynch into politics before. i.e. did he join FF or asked to join
What I should have said was that it’s a recent trend for this election. In the grand scheme of things, it’s definitely not a new phenomenon.
Tom Parlon immediately springs to mind for the last election. As does Jimmy Deenihan, Kerry footballing legend with Fine Gael in North Kerry.
Could it have anything to do with the rise in recent times of Independent candidates. I mean those being selected by the PDs for example, Tom Parlon, Colm O’Gorman would have made excelent single issue independents.
Sean Kelly was a local election candidate for Fine Gael previously so if this comes off it is hardly a big jump.
Great, just what we needed. I hope more celebrities do not abuse their celebrity power and jump on this bandwagon.
I do not wanna see Tom Cruise as a Governor, or Pamela Anderson in the Senate!
Celebrities need to stick to what they do best, ACTING!
