Bertie’s election call is somewhat bizzare, to say the least. Were it called last Sunday, the Mahon tribunal would have been suspended.
This is not the first time Bertie has lost his nerve - remember his party address? Reminds me that Bertie might not be the political genius that he believes himself to be.

I agree with the talk that he was dead cert to do it on thursday then backed off again. I am guessing it was a Mara kick in the arse that got the announcement today. I suspected that the first week in june was what he was looking for.
Still untalked about on top of hte tribunal is the high court case in which the state has to prove it couldnt and now shouldnt redraw boundaries in time for election.
It could be some overtime for the recently appointed boundary commission if things go agianst the Bert. He may look a little foolish redrawing in the middle of an election
Its highly unlikely any court would force a redrawing of the boundaries during an election.
Our Courts just don’t overtly interfere in politics in this way.
I think it’s more likely that Ahern is afraid that his account of his financial “gifts” won’t quite tally with the recollections of his friends, and the questions will start again about how someone. who says he was so stuck for cash. could lay his hands on so much of it…
