It is nice to see when something you talked about happens. From Ireland.com State may put tax on standard light bulbs

The cost of the CFL bulbs needs to come down before they can put bans on ordinary lightbulbs. banning them or taxing them now would only add to inflation. people will also still buy the ordinary bulbs as they are more widely availible at the moment.

CFL bulbs save you money over their lifetime, so if anything banning incandescent bulbs will reduce inflation.

I was watching questions and answers last night (yeah I know! Switched to Podge and Rodge at 10:55, far more mentally stimulating than watching ‘Dodge the Question’). I noted comment from Ed Walsh re: nuclear power. Whilst I could not defend his comments over a mere 80 deaths in Chernobyl he made an interesting point on the uses, cleanliness and costs of nuclear energy and the apparent movement of the Greenpeace chair towards this energy source. Walsh cited Finland as an exemplary country in this discussion. I have to admit that the country is really very small to properly engage in the emissions trading scenarios and we are really buckling the economy and competition with expensive energy costs. so something needs to be done.

On Chernobyl, I was glad that Simon Coveney was on the panel as he has been to Chernobly and was not going to allow the debate go on.

I’d not be a fan of the plan to destroy the ESB. Look what happened with eircom. Not an ideal situation. Any plans need to be carefully thought out and heavily laden with poison pills. I noted also Walsh’s comments on the likeness of VHI and ESB.

    ;)
