Vitamin C

All politicians love jumping on an old band wagon. The latest being the kids in New Zealand he showed that Ribena did not have as much Vitamin C as they said. So now Mary Upton has come out and said. Our schools must be equipped to test for Vitamin C

“We’ve just seen the case in New Zealand where two teenagers discovered that claims made by Ribena as to the Vitamin C content of their blackcurrant drink were inaccurate. The test is very easy to carry out.

“Testing of food in schools, at both primary and secondary level, would encourage students to engage with the process and would give them a better understanding about what they eat and drink, and the effect, positive or negative, it can have on them. Schools should be equipped to do such tests.

Thing is the test is actually quiet easy and any school with the very basic lab probably is already be equipped to do it (in some cases probably the only thing equipped to do). It is a basic titration. Which from my memory of Leaving Cert Chemistry forms a large part of the Lab curriculum. Here is how you do it.

Unfortunately, many of our secondary schools, and most of our primary schools, wouldn’t even have the facilities to do a titration. Upton is, of course, Dr Mary Upton, a noted agricultural scientist, so it’s good to see her pushing the idea of introducing practical science early in children’s school careers.
