The Galway city-based councillor is spear heading a campaign to get phosphates removed from dishwasher detergent. “Without realising it, most of us wash phosphates down our drains every day in the detergents we use in dishwaters,” said Councillor Crowe.“When dishwasher powder containing phosphates reaches the lake it results in algal growth. Algae uses up the water’s oxygen supply, depriving fish and plant life of air and harming the Corrib.”
