Meath’s Wallace Savaged by Village Magazine

Read more about: Fianna Fail, Meath, Meath East

FF election candidate for Meath East was savaged in this issue of Village Magazine. Dubbed the “Laziest TD in the Dail” by Village who analysed the sitting Meath TDs contribution to the Dail. She has spoken on only one occasion, welcoming Shane MacEntee to the Dail and has tabled less than ten questions for written reply. Wallace also missed many votes in the Dail according to Village.

It should be recalled that Wallace was previously dropped as a Junior minister and boycotted the Dail in protest. The Drogheda Independent reported at the time that the ex-minister was protesting at not being told personally of the demotion. The demotion came despite a strong showing in the election with three FFers returned.

Wallace previously sparked controversy in East Meath when she announced a new school for Laytown days before the 2005 by-election to fill John Bruton’s seat. There was uproar in the area when she announced that a badly needed school would go ahead and a site had been identified. In fact no site had been secured and there was outcry amongst local county councillors and community groups. Indeed more than a year later a site for a school has yet to be identified despite much behind the scenes wrangling involving the East Meath development plan. In the end of the day it was not enough and Fianna Gael narrowly retained the seat.

The elevation of Wallace clearly signals that Fianna Fail are worried about Meath East, although it is unclear how the forestry portfolio will help a constituency which has experienced a population explosion in the last 10 years with no end in sight. The key issues in the constituency are the provision of basic necessities such as roads, public transport, police, childcare etc..

Indeed in the Indos’ analysis Meath East could be a barren spot for FF. The population mainly composed of young families moving from Dublin is not traditional FF grassroots by any means and it is clear that FF does not understand the culture and the needs of the generation Xers who live here. The population has grown tired of empty promises and lack of delivery on the basics and are eager to show their displeasure with the incumbent government at the next election.

I agree with the article Mary Wallace was elected to serve the people of Meath East and so far I haven’t once seen her get involved in local problems or even bring the problems up in the Dail. She is meant to represent the constituency in Dail and yet she seems to have taken more holidays than actually been the Dail.
