The Irish Times reports from her campaign launch last night in Dublin Mid West. There are a couple of smart remarks that spring to mind on this cool, chilly morning in response to some of Harney’s utterances.
“We have not spent 20 years, and particularly the last 10, building an Ireland where leading world companies can compete and win globally with Irish people, only now to risk all that by inward-looking, divided policies and attitudes in government.” Well the argument really is that on current evidence you haven’t really helped Ireland become all that competitive.
” A warning about the consequences for Ireland’s future if a party, suspicious of multinational companies and opposed to economic growth…” If news keeps going the way of recent weeks such suspicion may well be academic. As well as shared by a proportion of the population.
” The Minister said a problem facing the Republic now was that a failure to build infrastructure and to complete our motorway programme, as fast as possible, could cascade into a failure to attract new industry, failure to build up regional development and failure to start new businesses and grow new employment.” You have had ten years.

It’s ironic that she was warning that an alternative Government would see a flight of foreign investment from Ireland at exactly the same moment as Motorola brought the number of job losses in Munster this week to 1,000.
I don’t see redundancies as necessarily translating into votes against the government; those losing their jobs will probably be so disillusioned that they won’t vote at all. And your last point Cian should be a refrain echoed on every doorstep in the country: “You’ve had ten years.”
And Mary is the Minister for Blather and Lather?????? after her striking success in Health.
Maybe she should organise a call centre in Portlaoise prison to call the radio stations in support of the Tanaiste and herself.
