The first of a promised ten schools with enhanced physical education facilities will be located in Limerick if the Greens are in power after the election.
The promise was made this morning at the launch of the party’s proposals to improve physical education in Irish schools, held in Limerick’s Pery Hotel.
Speaking at the presentation, Limerick East candidate “Patricia Forde-Brennan said This is part of our plan to roll out 10 model sports schools nationwide in major regional population centres, with the pilot facility being located at a site in the Limerick area. Local schools will be invited to tender for the project, which will include a major upgrade of sporting facilities at the selected site,”
“I am delighted that Limerick has been selected as the first site for our proposed Model Sports School. Limerick has a strong sporting tradition within its education network and is renowned as a centre of excellence for training in sports and physical education. We are committed to establishing such a facility early on during our term of office in Government.”
“These schools will be modelled on the successful Westfields Sports School in Sydney, Australia, where academic performance and the achievement of sporting excellence go hand in hand,” Said Deputy Gogerty, who said the idea came about after a fact-finding mission by the Education and Science comittee to Australia.
I have the entire press conference on tape, am currently encoding it and will have it ready for viewing later this evening.

See limerick people will need to be fit as they wouldn’t have any trams
How long were they waiting at the Luas stop by the red cow before someone told them Limerick wasn’t serviced by it. Hopefully after that they travelled down to Limerick by car so they can see that the 100 roads they want to stop building now that plans are in place to make sure Dublin is sorted with public transportation are actually needed around the rest of the country country.
JohnMac, you are aware there is an actual train service from Heuston Dublin to Limerick?
Not every journey starts or ends with Dublin. There are trains to and from Dublin and each major city. There are no trains between Limerick and Waterford, Limerick and Galway, Limerick and Kilkenny, etc etc. How many people have died on the roads around Dublin in the last year. How many have died on the roads in Limerick, Cork, Donegal, Mayo etc. I expect you will find the road deaths in Ireland are heavily skewed to outside the capital. If the Greens stop investment on the roads linking the towns and cities around the country they will have blood on their hands.
I’m well aware that not every journey starts or ends in Dublin. Your comment however referred to the Greens trying to get the LUAS to Limerick.
Investing in roads improvement is one thing, spending money on upgrades that aren’t justified is another. The Dublin to Waterford is a case in point. It doesn’t have the traffic to justify a dualcarrigeway but it is being upgraded to motorway standard. Why would that be now, should I ask the minister for transport, Martin Cullen who is from Waterford?
“I’m well aware that not every journey starts or ends in Dublin. Your comment however referred to the Greens trying to get the LUAS to Limerick.”
The greens are not trying to get a LUAS in Limerick. They have promised ones for Galway and Cork, but not Limerick. I gather it is their view to use the existing rail infrastructure, and repair, or upgrade it for use as a light rail system for Limerick
Squid, he was talking about them getting on a LUAS to go to Limerick not providing a LUAS for Limerick.
