Which Side Are You On?

Read more about: Blogging, Fianna Fail, Government, Irish Politics

It’s said that there are two sides in politics — the inside and the outside. Not true! Two Irish political dynasties currently have members who are half in and half out, Síle de Valera and Seán Haughey.

Síle’s grandfather Eamon de Valera, and Seán’s father Charlie Haughey and grandfather Seán Lemass were all Fianna Fáil Taoiseach at some stage. The current Taoiseach Bertie Ahern seems determined to show that the Ahern family is in charge now, and intends to go on being in charge.

A tug of the forelock to
Wulfbeorn for alerting The Land Of Ireland to the OK Cupid political profiling quiz. It’s a good way of finding out where your views on social and economic issues put you on the political spectrum. This is especially useful in Ireland because although we don’t have the left right split familiar in traditional industrial countries, our society nonetheless does form political parties which organise around sets of social and economic values.

The quiz told me I’m a moderate on social issues (56% permissive) and a conservative on economic ones (63% permissive) — a centrist, in short. It says I exhibit a very well-developed sense of Right and Wrong and believe in economic fairness. I think that puts me somewhere between Sonny Bono and Dennis Hopper.I had thought I was a sociopath — someone who knows the difference between right and wrong, but doesn’t give a damn.

Excitingly dangerous to know, kind of.
