The Limerick Leader has come under fire from former Limerick Mayor, Diarmiuid Scully for what he claims are several inaccuracies which were printed in Wednesday’s edition of the paper.
The paper claimed that Scully was “sorely disappointed” at the fact that a decision was not made on whether or not he would be included on the party ticket for the upcoming General election. Cllr Scully has dismissed this claim
“It contained a statement that I was “sorely disappointed” at my failure to be added to the Fine Gael ticket on Tuesday night. This is not true. The meeting on Tuesday night was the final part in an ongoing process of consultation. The decision on whether or not to add me to the ticket will be made by the National Executive next Tuesday, February 6th. Far from being disappointed, I was very pleased with the positive and constructive meeting my campaign team and I had with Tom Curran and Frank Flannery.”
Cllr scully also disputes what the paper called a “leaked poll result.”
“[The Leader article] contained leaked figures from a private opinion poll. I have had sight of this poll. The figures quoted were not the figures in the poll and do not reflect its findings. Both figures are wrong. One differs from the poll by a factor of 50%.”
It looks as though the “paper of record” for Limerick needs to carry out a review of it’s sources, as Cllr Scully points out that this is not the first time the paper has “got it wrong.” But, is someone out to get him?
“This article was a malicious attempt to undermine my campaign by placing false information in the public arena. Last year, the same anonymous sources responsible for this leak, told the Limerick Leader that the Fine Gael National Executive had refused to restore the party whip to me. In fact the Executive had just voted overwhelmingly to restore the whip. Thankfully the reporter did his research fully and the lie was not printed. This time it has been. I would like to see it retracted.”
If Cllr Scully was hoping for a retraction in the City Edition this evening, he will be “sorely disappointed” as the paper continued to tout it’s Wednesday claims in an article highlighting how two other Fine Gael hopefuls were annoyed at being excluded from the Kilmurry Lodge Hotel meeting on Tuesday.
Kevin Keily, (the same one whose brother wants to up scuttle the Thomond Park redevelopment plan) and Mary Harty, were not invited to the meeting while Diarmiuid Scully was.

Well Noonan sees Scully as the biggest threat to his seat so I would start looking for the leak in his close circle of friends.
Didn’t Scully vote against the FG mayoral nominee a few years back? Speaks volumes for party loyalty and discipline if he gets added to the ticket. If I want to vote for a social conservative, I can pick FF but if FG wants middle class votes, the choice is clear.
Scully voted in favour of a FG candidate for Mayor which as it happened was himself. The entire issue has been dealt with by FG locally and nationally and in a manner that the public were all well aware of and it would seem to the satisfaction of all concerned. In marked contrasted to the warzone that was the Labour conflict in Limerick of the Mayoral nominee for both elections in 2005 and 2006.
