Donegal South-West, not wanting to be left out the fun and games in North-East, has apparently seen a power play by FG HQ. Joining the trend of unretirements, Dinny McGinley says he’s back on the ticket at the expense of Cllr Terence Slowey, who apparently has been persuaded to withdraw [UPDATED 2 MARCH].
Slowey’s statement makes clear that he is unhappy at the situation but there must have been enough evident problems to bring things to a head; also interesting is that FG saw the need to go back to name recognition rather than recruit an alternative new candidate. Things probably just got tighter for Pat “The Cope” as a result.
One other bit of news worth mentioning: in Cavan-Monaghan, yesterday’s Irish Times (subs. req’d) had it that Paudge Connolly (Ind.) will run as FF if he gets assurance about Monaghan hospital’s future from FF. This would set up a confrontation with the Health Service Executive, which wants to shut down acute inpatient care at the hospital. It also points to further evidence of a FF strategy to bring some independents into the fold, following the absorption of Ind. FF in Donegal NE.
UPDATE: Whatever deal was proposed to Paudge Connolly fell through, as he confirms he is running as an Independent.

Perhaps it may be time to get on to a big ship in the area
