Am I right in thinking that there are two distinct ‘party lines’ emerging as Ahern continues to get hauled through the Mahon Tribunal?
The first is the all-out defence of Martin Mansergh et. al. refusing to even countenance any possible wrongdoing by Ahern and willing to defend to the hilt Ahern no matter what evidence emerges (pace his Vincent Browne performance and Morning Ireland on Friday).
The second evidenced by Noel Dempsey on The Week in Politics, as well an ever increasing number of backbenchers and less-than-senior Ministers, the wait and see defence. While its clear that no one is not going to say “I back Bertie, he is not corrupt”, the bulk of the defence revolves around the wait and see line. Let the tribunal do its work and we will consider all evidence in its fullness. Its a handy way of getting around things without making any sticky political commitments should the unthinkable happen to Bertie.
