Optimism turns into conviction at Greens convention

Read more about: Uncategorized

Any neutral observer at the Green Party national convention in Galway this weekend could easily be mistaken into thinking the general election had long passed and the Greens had been swept into government as the minority party with resounding approval.

The optimism of the party has been apparent for a while, but it now seems that this has developed into an almost total conviction that the party will be part of the next government. This presumptuousness has been evident in the speeches of more than a couple of speakers, and internally the party is talking confidently about obtaining ten seats, with some prominent members suggesting that anything less than eight would be seen as a failure. The convention’s slogan sums up the mood well – Ready for Government.

A decade of proposing some of the most innovative policy ideas and long-term alternative solutions to our biggest challenges both globally and nationally may finally bring the Greens reward, but considering the mood this weekend, anything less than a significant jump in Dáil seats and support would come as quite a shock to most of the party’s members.

I think the realities of Government might come as a shock to them too.
