Interesting case of spin

Read more about: Cork, Fine Gael

I understand the reason why the governments decision to remove funding from Cork Airport is a bad idea. How we need viable airports to help decentralise the state from the already overcrowded Dublin Airport. I get and support all that. It is just this that gets me. Fine Gael released a statement on it making very decent points about the situation likethe Reduced attractiveness and competitiveness for securing inward investment. But they headline the release.

Govt U-turn on Airport debt means higher air fares for passengers – Buttimer.

Think about it what the headline is saying is that the Government should be subsidising air fares for the lets admit it here middle and upper classes. So why the need for that headline, when the basic substance of the issue (Benefit of Airport to the economic well being of the region) is valid enough. Why not Govt U-turn on Airport debt bad for economy. The answer it spins better, it connects with people etc etc.

As you noted yourself the economy doesn’t vote. Also, the more local electorate point is that it will be higher fares for some passengers at some airports and not at others.
