FFs Andrews Raises Dublin South-East General Election Hopes

Read more about: Dublin, Fianna Fail

Fianna Fáil candidate Chris Andrews made a spirited start to what will probably be a sixteen-month long election campaign in the Dublin South East constituency last night by getting himself out leafletting houses in the wind and rain on St Valentine’s Night.

Chris, who lost his Dublin City Council seat in June 2004, was selected as a candidate last week by his constituency organization. FF Councillor Garry Keegan and Senator John Hanafin are both hoping to be added by party HQ to the Fianna Fáil ticket in the constituency. Sitting FF deputy Eoin Ryan is quitting Dáil Éireann to concentrate on his role in the European Parliament. Fine Gael Councillor Lucinda Creighton will make a strong bid to regain the party seat Frances Fitzgerald lost in the 2002 Dáil contest, but Sinn Féin’s Daithí Doolan is unlikely to get enough votes to get him into Leinster House.

Standing for re-election in Dublin South East will be Labour veteran Ruairi Quinn, whose seat is always a struggle to retain, Green Party stalwart John Gormley, who will be hoping for a better showing than the party managed in the 2004 local elections, and Progressive Democrat Justice Minister Michael McDowell, so confident of being returned that he’s thrown himself behind glossy plans for a Manhattan-style mixed use 50+ storey development on the Poolbeg Peninsula. At least it’s not an incinerator.
