Not the Irish way

At the risk of moving Cian’s much more interesting post a little down the screen, it’s perhaps worth noting that the resignation of Peter Hain from Gordon Brown’s Cabinet raises yet again the very different standards for resignation in the UK and Ireland. Hain, who clearly botched the management of donations to his failed campaign for Labour Deputy Leader, still maintains he did nothing “wrong” but the political dynamic sets a high price for such oversights. Yet only this week we had Sean Power skating by with an apology for a mis-statement of financial assets. And of course the much bigger question of whether Bertie Ahern’s tax affairs were actually in order in 2002. One difference: Hain’s hand was forced when his file was referred to the police. Here the worst that can happen is that something gets referred to a tribunal. 10 years later maybe there’s an answer.
