The Russian’s have succeeded in bullying a country into changing their policies by using oil and gas as a weapon. While alot of lip service is given to the topic of energy security very little is done about it. The only way for Ireland to secure energy security is to increase the amount of renewable’s investment in this country and continue to offer incentives for gas exploration in Ireland. If we don’t then we will find our selves at the beck and call of the Kremlin. But the government seems unwilling to move on this.
We still have the ESB controlling the national grid. This is the government that is supposed to be right wing. Yet is allowing a state monopoly to go unchecked. Indeed evening allowing it to improve by allowing the take over of the only other major power generation on this island Northern Ireland’s Veridian. Meanwhile as the Greens point out.
The [European] Commission is clearly willing to support large scale demonstration projects such as off-shore grids to serve wind wave and tidal power systems, which our Government has thus far ignored.
